Several important transportation planning efforts are underway that will help shape the future of mobility in Delta County and the Central Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), working in coordination with Delta Area Transit Authority (DATA) and the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission (CUPPAD), is conducting a Delta County Transportation Needs Assessment and a regional transit feasibility study. Together, these efforts will examine how transportation is currently working, identify gaps and challenges, improve service efficiency, and explore opportunities for better regional transit coordination — beginning in Delta County.
Current Service Areas and the Need for a Transportation Needs Assessment
Currently, Delta Area Transit Authority (DATA) does not serve all areas of Delta County and faces challenges related to service hours, days of operation, and service areas.
“I’m eager for the upcoming needs assessment, which will be an important tool in identifying gaps and opportunities to expand service in our seven non-millage areas, with Wells being the largest,” said Amy Fudala, Mobility Manager.
After more than 35 years, the areas shown in blue on the service map represent the communities currently served through DATA’s voter-approved millage. The remaining seven townships are not currently included in the millage and therefore do not receive the same level of transit service.
Conducting this transportation needs assessment is a critical step in understanding service gaps, documenting community needs, and planning for future expansion. The results will help inform efforts to pursue inclusion of the remaining seven townships in Delta County in a future millage, supporting more equitable and reliable access to transportation countywide.
As part of this work, community input will be gathered from residents, employers, healthcare providers, seniors, people with disabilities, and community partners. Public feedback will play a critical role in informing future service planning, partnerships, and funding opportunities.
How to Participate
Information about surveys, public engagement opportunities, and study updates will be shared as these projects move forward. Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to participate when opportunities become available.
